Raphael Leon

Principal Research Scientist

Raphael is an innovative and passionate pharmacologist with several years of R&D experience, which has showcased his expertise in natural product drug discovery, focusing on the therapeutic potential of botanical and fungal natural products. At the Jodrell Laboratory, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Raphael worked on the Polypharmakos project which aimed to find new plant derived anti-microbials.  During this time he acquired a range of skills including developing cell assay techniques to validate the extracts created.

With a robust background in ethnobotany and pharmacology, Raphael has successfully driven research initiatives, involving psychedelics, cannabinoids and neurotrophin receptor modulators, at Pangea Bio, a UK-based biotech company.  His role involved leading drug discovery programs, particularly around nature-inspired compounds and natural remedies. Notably, they played a pivotal role in the creation and design of molecular series for neurodegeneration treatment and psychedelic compounds for a range of both CNS and PNS disorders. Raphael has a deep knowledge of psychedelic chemistry and pharmacology which underpinned the whole drug discovery program.

As a diligent professional, he ensured full adherence to the Nagoya protocol and fostered relationships with traditional knowledge holders. During his time at Pangea he was also instrumental in creating investor decks to explain the concepts and raise funds.

His comprehensive skill set includes in-vitro assays, drug discovery, SAR analysis, analytical thinking, and being a strong team player. His career also showcases leadership roles, including mentoring interns and being recognized as the ‘Go-to’ scientist for natural product idea generation.
